As people age, it is very common for a person’s mobility to decrease. Everyday activities like going up and down stairs, reaching high shelves, and even using the bathtub can become major obstacles for some individuals. If you or your loved one has experienced decreasing mobility in recent years, it is very important to acknowledge the need for changes in your home, and to adapt accordingly. But making your home safer for someone with limited mobility doesn’t have to mean large, expensive upgrades. Here are 3 simple and inexpensive ways that you can make your bathroom safer for anyone using it.

Walk-In Tub or Shower

Installing a brand new walk-in tub or shower would be a rather large expense. However, if you can’t afford to get a completely new tub or shower, there is another option available. You can purchase kits that allow you to convert your existing tub or shower into a walk-in version. Walk-in shower kits are extremely affordable, as are their bathtub counterparts, especially if you take into consideration the difference such an upgrade can make in a person’s life. These kits allow those with limited mobility to once again use the tub and/or shower on their own, which can go a long way towards preserving their sense of independence and dignity.

Grab Handles

As people age, the ability to sit and stand on their own can be greatly reduced. This becomes especially troublesome when that person needs to use the toilet or take a bath. Getting on and off the toilet, or into and out of the bathtub, can be extremely difficult, and even dangerous. Simply installing grab handles beside the toilet and bathtub can make a huge difference. Even if you have a walk-in tub, standing from that low of a seated position can be nearly impossible for someone with limited mobility. Handles are inexpensive and can be installed in minutes, but they make a big difference in your loved one’s life.

Shower Seats

Even if you install a walk-in shower as mentioned above, standing in the shower without support can be difficult for some individuals. Installing a shower seat can help to alleviate that discomfort, as well as reducing the risk of slipping on the wet shower floor. Shower seats can be purchased from many providers, and can simply be set inside the shower stall, requiring no hardware or installation effort.

If you install walk-in tub or walk-in shower kits, and combine those with grab handles and shower seats, you will make your bathroom a much safer and more accessible space for everyone.
